In-House Development vs. Packaged Solutions

Most of today's businesses rely on software for accounting, planning, scheduling, or customer relationship management. The business issue with software is not in-house creation vs. packaged workflow solutions but rather user acceptance and uptake. The problem is figuring out how to make the program more intuitive, simple, and less intimidating for individuals to embrace and utilize in their daily work routines.
    
When assessing your business needs, you must choose between in-house developed software or commercial (out-of-the-box) packaged solutions. The decision between custom business software and a pre-packaged solution can have far-reaching consequences that are felt years later. It would be best to make this decision considering the long-term ramifications. Short-term pain often leads to long-term gain, while the unenviable opposite can also be true.
